Industry Specifics – Hiring a Consultant

In our industry, there are so many components to know, understand and comply with. Between a number of different regulations, best business practices, and suggested procedures, it can be difficult to always be confident that you are operating within the boundaries of compliance.

For example, when you are first starting out, chances are your main focus is obtaining clientele to support your business. But, what clientele should you be pursuing? The same question can be asked when picking your first power unit and trailer to purchase. What make and model is best, do you want a standard or automatic transmission? What gear ratio is best for what you are hauling? How much horsepower?

These are just a couple of decisions you will need to make when starting out, but what happens once you are rolling and you feel you are making progress? Well, within 9 – 12 months, Alberta-based carriers are required to undergo a new carrier compliance review. Are you confident you have everything in place for this review?

An existing carrier that was operating just in the province of Alberta, say running cars from Calgary, AB to Grande Prairie, AB, and now decides to start hauling super b’s from Calgary, AB to Texas? Are you confident that you understand IFTA and prorate? Have you ensured your organization has registered with the Clearing House program accurately through the FMCSA and your fleet is being randomly tested accurately?

What happens, worst case, one of your drivers is involved in a motor vehicle collision and the other party decides to challenge your business practices in court. Are you confident that you are operating within the boundaries of compliance?

These are just a couple out of the many reasons I recommend working with a transportation consultant to help ensure you are in compliance with all required legislation. There are a number of positive reasons to work with a consultant as well, such as the ability to help the labour some monthly tasks of monitoring hours of service logs, ensuring pre-trip inspections are being completed and reported properly, accurate IFTA and prorate reporting and more.
